Art as Resistance: February
✶ About Art as Resistance ✶
Art as Resistance is a personal commitment I made at the start of 2025: to keep creating no matter how uncertain or heavy the world feels. Each month, I make something — in any medium — as an act of perseverance and defiance against stagnation or despair. There are no rules for what form it takes, only the intention to stay present, to feel, and to keep making.
Digital Self Portraits, February 2025
My love for photography came out of hibernation in February. I photographed a few events, which forced me to dust it off for more than my weekly PetSmart volunteer shifts (highly recommend volunteering with the rescue who occupies the PetSmart cat center near you). I know the importance of art and expression when things get tough - whether personally or within the world. I think I got a little burned out by the commercialization of my content, its hard when you do make money from social media but you also make art. I stopped creating moody self portraits because I couldn’t tag brands, and they seemed to perform the worst online. Isn’t that so stupid? But I suppose all artists find themselves between passion and making a living, no matter what decade or century.
As well, to try and limit my doom-scrolling, I’ve been trying to find other ways of keeping my hands busy: coloring books, junk journaling and collaging, I even started to learn to knit! I knit my very first scarf! It was just a garter stitch the whole way through, but it’s so very cool to have something tangible to show for the effort. I have a goal of knitting an XL triangle scarf and a sweater! Though I’m giving myself until the fall to complete them.
